At times you may want to just copy a small part out of a larger image, or in some instances remove the background entirely so the element can be composited into a bigger picture :)

But what are the main reason(s) for removing the background from the subject as opposed to removing the subject from the background?
Thanks in advance, and thank you on making my learnings easier with your great site!

From experience, Ive found that taking out the background in chunks gives the psychological boost of ‘progress’ – however I only normally do it in 3 or 4 pieces. There’s loads of different variants in method, and thats the beauty of it, hopefully this walkthrough acts as a gentle introduction and gets people on the right ‘path’ so to speak lol.. Excuse the lame pun.

Conzz 8-)

Apart from the fact that it seems to me that a lot of time goes into the closing-and-filling of each segment, you can create a vector mask from the complete path (click the layer mask button twice with the path selected) which lets you come back to the outlines should you find you chopped away too much or too little. That also lets you use the path for the bits that need to be sharp while you can cut around the hair generously and use the layer mask and a brush to deal with that. And lastly, you can save the path with the original jpg for future use (I think for that you need to double click on it and rename it from workpath to anything so it will stick).

great explanation though as always
